About the Company
Huawei’s Amsterdam Research Center is at the forefront of AI and machine learning innovation. Our mission is to develop cutting-edge technologies that transform how people interact with information — enhancing productivity and redefining possibilities across multiple industries. We bring together top talent from across the globe to explore the limits of artificial intelligence and deliver real-world impact.
Role Overview
We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Research Engineer to join our AI research team, with a focus on information retrieval and generative AI models. This role is central to designing and building intelligent systems that improve retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and multimodal AI experiences.
You will work collaboratively with researchers, engineers, and scientists to develop scalable, high-performing solutions using large-scale datasets and advanced ML techniques. A special focus will be on multimodal input scenarios, where the system needs to understand and process more than just text.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and optimize information retrieval models to support RAG systems.
- Enhance LLM reasoning performance and reduce hallucinations to improve the end-user experience.
- Conduct research in state-of-the-art NLP, machine learning, and information retrieval methodologies.
- Develop scalable algorithms for real-time and batch data processing.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate RAG capabilities into real-world applications.
- Collect, clean, and analyze large datasets to support ongoing development.
- Benchmark model performance using both internal metrics and public datasets.
- Stay current with the latest advancements in AI, ML, NLP, and IR.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field (with a focus on NLP, ML, or IR).
- Strong programming skills in Python and experience with PyTorch or similar ML frameworks.
- In-depth knowledge of deep learning architectures (e.g., Transformers, BERT, GPT).
- Demonstrated research experience, including publications in top-tier conferences/journals.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR).
- Expertise in retrieval-based models (e.g., vector space models, BM25, neural retrieval methods).
Familiarity with knowledge bases, information extraction, and QA systems.
